Tignes

It is 28 years since Le Ski added a new resort. And what a resort!

There is no doubt about it, the Tignes – Val d’Isère ski area is one of the best, if not THE best ski domains in the world. It has altitude, glaciers, tree-skiing, off-piste galore, wide-open slopes and a fantastic lift system. Historically, Le Ski’s regular expert skiers have been able to quickly make it from one end of the ski area in Val d’Isère to the other side in Tignes Les Brevières – with time to do a couple of runs on the 10km Sache black – and a lunch at Alpage des Chaudannes – before making it back in time for Afternoon Tea in the chalet! But for the less able among us, exploring that side of Tignes has been brief. Well not anymore! Now, Le Ski has arrived.

For those that don’t know them, Tignes is made up of a handful of villages: Val Claret, Le Lac, Le Lavachet, Les Boisses (1800) and Les Brevières. For our first foray, we will be based in Tignes Les Boisses or Tignes 1800 as it is known, the village on the far side of the dam with the beautiful replica of the church that was flooded when the dam was completed in 1952. However, Tignes 1800 was really just a hamlet en route to the other villages until 2013 when huge investment was made and new chalets and apartments were built – and nowadays you have a ski in/ski out village with shops and restaurants of its own. As well as direct access to the ski area, connections to the other villages are possible with the regular resort buses too.

You can now take your time to explore this side of the ski area, and get a selfie at the famous Aiguille Percée, the Eye of the Needle rock formation. The tree runs over here are excellent, with blues, reds and blacks that lead you down to Tignes 1800 and charming village of Les Brevières at 1550m.

Tignes is famous for being the resort born out of the flooding of the valley in 1952, with the huge dam that you pass over as you drive up to resort. It's a new resort for Le Ski and we have just the one chalet (so far!). You may well know the area from having stayed in Val D'Isère, as both resorts are well conected (and it was formerly know as the Espace Killy area).

Piste Map - Tignes

Tignes has super uplift credentials! It has one of the most modern lift systems in the world. The links over the mountain to Val d'Isere are simple and easy giving you a vast expanse of piste possibilities. Most of Tignes ski area surrounds the natural lake which is at 2100m and rises up to the Grande Motte glacier at 3456m. But it also goes down through the trees to Les Boisses (Tignes 1800) and Les Brevières at 1550m.

Beginners can ski for free in Les Boisses (near our chalet Raoul) on the village's nursery slopes using the two magic carpet lifts. Alternatively there are free lifts in all the other villages but the Rosset chairlift in Le Lac is worth a mention as that's where the meeting point for most of the ski schools is situated. Then, when you feel ready, head up Chaudannes for a gentle blue back down to Le Lac.

Intermediates and Expert skiers are spoiled for choice. The red from the top of the Tignes funicular is memorable, giving lovely views over the villages on the descent towards Val Claret. Off-piste in Tignes is legendary and the local guides will happily show you the untracked valleys. If you feel up to it, try the 10km Sache black down to Les Brevières - you'll deserve a drink once you get down!
