Let's hear it for songwriters
A wonderful art
It was the sad news of the death of Gerry Goffin which, once again, reminded your correspondent just how important songwriters are. Goffin wrote many gems during his lifetime but is probably best known amongst people of a certain age for his collaboration with the woman he married in 1959, Carole King. Two of his songs appeared on her legendary - and wonderful - album "Tapestry", the rest mainly being penned by Carole King herself.
Tapestry - 25 million copies sold (so far...)
Of the truly inspired music and lyrics on this beautiful album, Will You Love Me Tomorrow and (You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman were written by Gerry Goffin. If you've never heard the album, you're missing out...in our humble opinion. It's one of your correspondent's top 5 albums (out of roughly 1100 in his possession...).

As well as King's highly individual piano style and warm, homely voice there are also harmonies from James Taylor and Joni Mitchell. James and Carole were already good friends (and nothing more!) by then and Joni was recording in the studio next door - not bad getting Joni Mitchell as a backing singer!
Singer-songwriters - how do they do it?!
The ability to write music and lyrics is impressive enough...to be able to perfom those songs as well is a rare gift. Singer-songwriters deserve all the praise they get and are rightly feted.
Here's our Friday afternoon list of best ever singer-songwriters:
Carole King
James Taylor
Neil Young
Joni Mitchell
Joan Baez
Justin Currie
Leonard Cohen
Van Morrison
David Gray
Billy Joel
Tom Waits
Oh - and Bob Dylan...
