When is the best time to ski?

Well we know WHERE to ski – La Tania, Val d’Isère and Courchevel of course! (And maybe St Anton or Zermatt, although we’d have to change the name of the company…) But WHEN is the best time to ski during the Northern hemisphere’s winter season?

Let us talk you through it…

December: Pre-Christmas skiing is a great way to escape from the OTT British shopping experience! During Noel itself, it’s a winter wonderland with twinkly lights and full on festive indulgence without the washing up. Bring a group of friends for New Year and you’re guaranteed a great way to see in the New Year (plus skiing is by far the best hangover cure ever invented!)

January: Quiet lift queues, tranquil pistes and generally reliable snow (especially in higher resorts), and warming vin chaud or hot chocolate in a cosy restaurant. Plus it’s usually the cheapest time of the winter to ski. What’s not to love?!

February: It’s a little bit warmer but also busier by February; some people are put off by the French half term kids bombing down the beginners slopes. But here’s a little tip – the French half term is late this year and doesn’t coincide with the UK holidays!

March: Hello sunshine! You can now drink a cold beer on the terrace without your gloves on… March is also a great time for families with pre-schoolers as you don’t have to worry quite so much about the 100s of layers. But don’t forget the suncream as it can really be quite hot and snow reflects the UV rays.

April: For those restricted to school holidays, April is usually the cheapest option for getting the family on skis. Plus of course its warm and lighter longer which makes for extra long ski days and après-bumboarding. Again – don’t forget your suncream, and maybe even shorts if your chalet has a balcony – always nice to go back to work with a tan!
