Why we chose Courchevel, La Tania and Val d'Isere...

19-Mar-2014

We're often asked how we chose our 3 resorts...

Courchevel 1650 (3 valleys)
Initially we came across Courchevel 1650 by chance one day in 1983. We'd spent our first season in Kitzbuhel but realised that, at 760 metres, that was way too low for the consistently good snow sought by UK holidaymakers.
Courchevel 1650 (now Courchevel Moriond) is simply ideal as a ski resort: It's high and its slopes are North facing yet it sits on a ridge on the Eastern edge of the massive 3 valleys ski area meaning that it gets the sun until late in the day.
Courchevel Moriond's slopes are mainly pasture land so even when snow cover is relatively thin you can still fly around the area with confidence.
Because Courchevel Moriond is at one end of the 3 valleys, people don't ski through it, so it's never too busy - simple but true! You only have to go to Meribel in high season to see what a nightmare it can be with skiers descending from all sides to the central valley.
Courchevel 1650 remains at the heart of Le Ski's operations - we operate 18 chalets in the village sleeping from 2 to 22.

Val d'Isere (Espace Killy, linked with Tignes)
We'd been running catered chalets in Courchevel for 10 years when our returing guests started to ask whether we could take them on holiday somewhere else! We sent round questionnaires to find out where they'd like to go. The answer was unanimous - Val d'Isere.
Val d'Isere is also a perfect ski resort - it's high, its slopes are mainly North facing and it has a massive amount of skiing suitable for all standards of skier and boarder. The skiing is easily accesible, there's a free bus service linking all the parts of the resort and the lift system has been hugely improved over the last decade.
Val d'Isere may be at the end of the road high up the Tarentaise valley but it's pretty cosmopolitan - you'll find a refreshing choice of restaurants and bars to test out. And there's something for every budget too - anything from pizza takeaway to oyster bars.
We built our own Cacholet chalets here for the 2000 season and they're as popular as ever - the huge outdoor hot tub helps! Some of our office staff even prefer Val d'Isere to Courchevel...I couldn't posssibly comment.

La Tania (3 valleys)
It was only when we started to have our own children that we realised exactly what you needed on a family skiing holiday. We created our very own Le Ski creche here straight away, with fully qualified, well trained nannies. We figured that if the chilidren were happy, so were the parents...it's true!
La Tania was designed with families in mind - there are no cars in the resort centre, there's a brilliant sledging zone and there are lots of family activities both in and outdoors.
We think that families like to take holidays with other families so the children can comfortably mix and play rather than having to worry about all those pesky adults getting in the way.
Our family chalets in La Tania work really well - there are value for money family rooms aswell as our own private Le Ski creche. We've all put our own kids in the creche and our fabulous staff seeem to get consistently high praise.
